STI Pub Companies Announce Release of STIX Fonts Version 2.0.0
Melville, NY, December 1, 2016 – The STI Pub Companies are pleased to announce the release of Version 2.0.0 of the STIX (Scientific and Technical Information Exchange) Fonts. Developed by renowned typeface developer Tiro Typeworks this next generation release provides a greatly enhanced single, unified solution for all aspects of technical typesetting.
Since its inception, the main focus of the STIX Font project has been the creation and maintenance of a world-class math font suitable for use in scientific and technical publishing. “Through earlier releases of STIX Fonts, we had already made great strides to enhance the representation of formulas and equations,” stated Mark Doyle, Chief Information Officer of the American Physical Society (APS), speaking on behalf of the STI Pub Companies. “This new release, which has been two years in the making, represents another significant step forward.”
STIX Fonts 2.0.0 presents the first set of enhancements to the text portion of the fonts to meet the high standards expected by scientific and technical publishing professionals and researchers. Additionally, the math portions of the font have been refined, improving the fonts’ internal consistency and compatibility with various math typesetting systems.
“With this major update of the STIX fonts, STI Pub re-affirms its commitment to making a comprehensive, high-quality font freely available to anyone involved with technical publishing,” commented Catherine Roberts, Executive Director of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). “Combining the unsurpassed coverage of math symbols in STIX Version 1 with an extensive new print- and web-friendly redesign of the text fonts, STIX 2 has the potential to revolutionize the way we see math, both on our screens and on the printed page. The AMS is proud to be part of the partnership offering this resource to the world.”
STIX Fonts are available under royalty-free license to anyone—including publishers, software developers, scientists, students, and the general public—under the SIL Open Font License. This license is designed specifically for collaborative font projects and to provide a free and open framework in which fonts may be shared. The font is available for download at https://sourceforge.net/projects/stixfonts/. For more information, visit the STIX Fonts website at www.stixfonts.org.
