The fonts have been completed and the release candidate has been reviewed by the STIX Technical Review Committee. We are now wrapping up the documentation and preparing the press release. We hope to release by Friday May 21 or Monday May 24 at the latest.

March 29, 2010

Kerning tables have been completed and the release candidate has been under review by the STIX Technical Review Committee for the past 10 days. A few minor problems have been addressed and final review should be completed this week.

March 1, 2010

The STIX Technical Review Committee has approved the STIX Fonts Release Candidate. The final required step – preparation of kerning tables for the Latin character set – is in progress but is taking a little longer than anticipated. Kerning tables have been approved for medium weight upright glyphs and we are now reviewing italic, bold italic, and bold upright. We now anticipate release of the production fonts during the final week of March.

The STIX Technical Review Committee has approved the STIX Fonts Release Candidate. One final task was required – to prepare kerning tables for the Latin character set. A draft version of the kerning tables has been prepared and is now under review. That review should be completed by 22 February and final changes completed by the end of February. We expect the process of incorporating the table into the fonts and preparing the final packaging to require one additional week. We will take one more week to check the packaging and installation instructions then release the fonts. The expected release date will be during the week of 15 March. We should be able to provide the release notes in advance of the actual release date. That document will be posted to this website as soon as it is finalized.

January 22, 2010

The STIX Technical Review Committee has approved the STIX Fonts Release Candidate. Now that the glyph designs and positions are final, one task remains to be completed. A kerning table is being prepared for the Latin character set. This work is expected to require at most 3 – 4 weeks. We will announce the planned release date as soon s we are far enough into the review of this table to predict its completion date. We expect the release date to be no later than some time during the week of 15 February.

As the kerning table is being created, we are also preparing the final documentation describing the contents of this release. The documentation will clearly note the contents of the release as well as what decisions wete made about items that we decided not to include in the initial release to avoid further delays. (For example, we decided to not take the time now to create Small Capitals or to prepare kerning tables for Greek or Cyrillic character sets. These may be added to a future release.) If the documentation is available before the final release, we will make the Release Notes available on this website at that time.

As a reminder, this release will be organized in a fashion similar to the beta test version. After this initial release is made, we will begin work on a version that incorporates advanced OpenType features so that version can be compatible for use with Word 2007. A final release will add LaTeX support. Those releases will follow on as quickly as they can be developed and tested.

December 21, 2009

A release candidate package of the STIX Fonts has been released to the STI Pub Technical Review Committee for a final check. The target for making a decision about release is 10 January. If no problems are reported from these final tests, the release date could follow within one week. Please do not request test copies; the fonts will not be distributed further until a release decision is made. The STIX Fonts will be released under the SIL Open Font License. Text of the license is available here.

We have discovered many missing glyphs in the non-Unicode fonts (Unicode Private Use Area. Resolution of these problems is still being investigated. We will post a revised target for release date as soon as the missing glyphs have been replaced.

We have received many requests for current copies or beta versions of the fonts but we are unable to supply anything until the final version. Our goal is to release the production version (OpenType fonts with Type 1 font information) some time during the last half of October. Advanced OpenType support (allowing the fonts to work with Office 2007 applications) will be released later this year, followed soon by LaTeX support.

September 29, 2009

The Unicode Technical Committee’s recent meeting led to a recommendation that STI Pub release the fonts with no further changes to the Private Use Area (non-Unicode glyph zone). While the UTC is likely to approve many of the glyphs currently in the PUA for Unicode value assignment, that action will not take place for several more months. Accordingly, we have moved to the final packaging stage. We expect to have the fonts available for a brief final check by the STIX Technical Review Committee (TRC) prior to release within the next 30 days.

August 6, 2009

The STIX Fonts Technical Review Committee has completed final testing of the candidate production version. The fonts will be packaged for release as soon as we receive word from the Unicode Technical Committee regarding their review of the non-Unicode glyphs from the font that currently make use of the Private Use Area of Unicode. As many as 125 of the nearly 350 glyphs may be given Unicode code points or variant status. The UTC meeting is next week.

We have received many requests for current copies or beta versions of the fonts but we are unable to supply anything until the final version. Our goal is to release the production version (OpenType fonts with Type 1 font information) before the end of September. Advanced OpenType support (allowing the fonts to work with Office 2007 applications) will be released later this year, followed soon by LaTeX support.

March 13, 2009

Near the end of February the candidate production version of the STIX Fonts was distributed to the STIX Technical Review Committee for final testing and approval. This version is based on the file organization of the beta test version but with many of the variant glyphs moved from the non-Unicode font files to the Unicode files using variant encodings. Details of the revisions will be made available during the final testing period. The target date for final release of this production version is end of May 2009. Work will then begin on a production release containing advanced OpenType features that will be capable of being used with applications like Office 2007. At the same time, we will begin work on a version that will provide LaTeX support.
